Apple’s iTV Set for September Launch With iAd-Supported Channels, iPad as Remote? – Mac Rumors.

In a blog post over the weekend, Digg co-founder Kevin Rose noted that he is hearing rumors that Apple’s revamped Apple TV hardware, reportedly set to be rebranded as “iTV”, will launch as early as next month. The hardware refresh, initially reported in late May and again addressed earlier this month, is said to be based on Apple’s iOS and carry a $99 price tag.

From what I hear we should expect to see the iTV launch in September. Also, keep an eye on GoogleTV – this is going to be a hot space in 2011.

Rose also shares some other details of his expectations for the iTV, including an arm of the App Store dedicated to the platform, the ability to subscribe to ad-supported content from individual television stations, MobileMe-based sharing of photos and videos, and integration of the iPad as a “big badass remote control” to offer control of and interaction with iTV content.

Apple is reportedly planning its annual iPod-focused media event for mid-September, and it seems likely that Apple would include an iTV launch there if it is in fact planning a September launch for the new hardware.

It is not entirely clearly how much of Rose’s information is reliably sourced and how much is mere speculation, as well as whether all of the cited features are expected to appear in the initial device launch. Rose has weighed in with a number of other Apple product rumors in the past and has at times offered correct accurate information.

How not to advertise your product

Apple seem to have the world under a mystical spell. No matter what they release, it sells. It sells millions! On the train the other day it was iPhone central everyone had one, and I had to ask myself, why? As a former iPhone user I know that it’s not a great phone, emails are ok, battery life is poor and reliability is poor yet still it seems whatever Apple tells the world, the world listens.

So I thought I would highlight a view points specific to the new iPad as to what I mean:

1) A magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price

Well not really is it? Firstly as a UK consumer seeing that on the Apple website is nothing more than plain annoying simply because there is NO PRICE advertised. How can you make such a bold claim and not release the price?

2) The best way to experience the web, emails, photos and video. Hands down.

OK firstly “The Web” no browser that does NOT support Flash can be the “best” way to experience the web especially with the amount of content that is embedded these days. Secondly emails, it is an acceptable way to view emails but as with the iPhone it is a clunky interface that is fine for quickly seeing what’s coming while your out and about but cannot seriously be used for sending emails. Now onto photos. Fine for viewing but surely the “best” way to experience photos is to take them on your device. Not only does the iPad not include a camera but to plug in your own digital camera to import your photos into iPhoto Apple will charge you for another stupid little adapter. Finally video. All that needs to be said is 4:3 aspect ratio. Isn’t the standard these days 16:9? So why has Apple decided to rip us off!

Now I’m not having a pop at Apple for their latest product, well yes I am, but more importantly i’m having a pop at the way in which Apple decides to advertise to us all about it’s products. Sure they are one of the worlds biggest companies and do extremely well but at what cost. For every customer who buys form them how many of them are happy?

When you advertise your products, be honest. In the long run you’ll feel better for it!

I haven’t had chance to make a proper post in quite a while but the big announcement from Apple last week deserved a quick note.

Apple, what are you doing you bunch of narrow minded muppets! Wow a big iPhone! Where’s my OS X!

Edit from my iPad 29/05/2010: sorry but it’s lovely!

Next-Generation Mac Pro to Receive Temporary Exclusive of Six-Core ‘Gulftown’ Processor?

Posted by: on Oct 17, 2009 | No Comments Tags: ,

Hardmac reports that an early 2010 revision to Apple’s Mac Pro may see the inclusion of Intel’s forthcoming six-core “Gulftown” processor as a temporary exclusive prior to the full mass release of the processor in the second quarter of 2010.

This Xeon is an evolution of those already powering Mac Pro 2009 with some new features:

- 6 cores and 12 threads for each CPU.
- 12 MB of shared cache instead of 8 MB today.
- 32-nm engraving vs. 45 nm today.
- Power consumption of future hexacore Xeon 32 nm will be slightly lower than the one of current quad core Xeon engraved at 45 nm.

The report’s source also indicates that the Mac Pro will see the addition of 10 Gbit Ethernet connectivity and support for 8 GB and 16 GB RAM modules, pushing total RAM capacity to an astounding 128 GB.

Hardmac is unsure whether use of the Gulftown processor, to be branded Intel Core i9 and be part of Intel’s Xeon 5600-series, would extend to the entry-level Mac Pro model or whether Apple will continue to use lower-level quad-core processors in those machines.

It is not unusual for Apple to receive early access to Intel’s latest processor for use in the Mac Pro, with the most recent instance being the current generation, which received Nehalem processors prior to them even having been announced by Intel.
